Reddit and AI: why AI cites already-popular comments

10 000 questions asked to Reddit’s AI: the audit field
I track 15 sites a week. They all ask me the same question. Why Reddit’s AI cites some comments. Never the others.
An audit just asked Reddit’s AI 10 000 questions. Three times each question. 30 000 answers analyzed. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign traced every citation back to 14,68 million comments.
The field: 20 advice and support subreddits. Not memes. Not crypto enthusiast forums. People asking for an opinion. People answering with their expérience.
The goal: understand what the machine picks. And what it discards.
The result runs against intuition. We thought the AI would go after lived language. First-person testimonials. Stories of struggle. It’s the opposite.
According to Search Engine Journal, the audit shows formal, heavily upvoted, and early-published comments have far higher chances of being picked up. Experiential language recedes. The « I » disappears.
The selection bias, here, is measurable.
10 000 questions. 30 000 answers. 14,68 million comments. Enough to see.
For e-commerce, it changes everything. The Reddit strategy is no longer posting your expérience. It’s posting what the machine will cite.
I look at the AI-generated answers on my client catégories. The filter is the same everywhere. The comment that rises is rarely the most moving. It’s the most readable.
The paper hasn’t been peer-reviewed yet. It covers this Reddit segment: advice and support. Not news feeds. Not pure enthusiast forums. The results hold for this perimeter.
But 14,68 million comments traced. That carries weight.
Why this audit arrives now. Reddit has become a major source of AI citations. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity. They all cite Reddit. Understanding the selection bias means taking back control of generative visibility.
E-commerce players who ignore it keep posting community content for humans. They get upvotes. Not citations.
Formality raises the odds of being cited by 49 %
The strongest predictor is form. Emotional content comes after.
A comment one standard deviation more formal sees its chances of being selected climb by 49 %. The odds ratio is 1.488. Formality was measured with a text classifier.
Normative words like « should » or « must » also play a role. +7 % chances. Less massive. Still confirms a trend.
Personal expérience markers, on the other hand, lower the odds. Odds ratio of 0.789. A drop of about 21 %. First-person pronouns, past tense. Everything that tells a lived story. The machine devalues it.
Supportive language also declines. 0.924. The AI does not retain raw empathy. It retains clear prescription.
Once you control for the comment’s score, its position in the thread, and its age, the formality effect shrinks. 1.213 instead of 1.488. The experiential effect moves to 0.860. It doesn’t disappear.
« Our study is observational and should not be interpreted causally. »
Translation. Writing formally doesn’t guarantee being picked up. But the formal comment has a higher rating in the data. The correlation is solid.
I see the same movement with my clients. Answers written in a measured tone, with clear recommendations, full sentences. They appear more often in AI summaries.
The typical comment « honestly I tested it for three months and it’s bad » doesn’t pass. It contains expérience. Not prescriptive structure.
The machine prefers: « Here is what to check before buying. You should consider size, voltage, and maintenance. »
Formality is about sentence structure, not agency artifice. Subject, verb, recommendation. No emotional digression.
For e-commerce, translating product expertise into this register increases chances. No ranking promise. But a clear signal.
One important detail. The study separates formality from voting. Both rise together. Formality keeps its own effect after adjustment.
Which means a recent comment, not yet massively voted, benefits from being formal. It becomes more citable. And more likely to accumulate votes.
One trap: confusing formality with corporate tone. Here, formality is about concreteness. Full sentences. No abbreviations. No syntactic slack. It’s far from an institutional brochure.
The formality classifier used by researchers captures this structure. Not marketing jargon.
In French, equivalents of « should » and « must »: « vous devriez », « il faut », « privilégiez ». These recommendation formulations stand out.
The vote crushes everything: 2,88 times more chances with score
One figure to remember. A comment’s score multiplies its chances of being picked up by 2,88 when it climbs one standard deviation.
Score is the variable most tied to selection in the model.
The researchers compared cited comments to other comments in the same thread. The median selected comment sat at the 91st percentile of score in its discussion. The non-selected comment, at the 45th percentile.
91st percentile vs. 45th percentile. The machine goes looking for answers already validated by the crowd.
Another point. 92 % of selected comments were direct replies to the original post. These direct replies accounted for only 53 % of all collected comments.
Position matters. Timing too. The selected comment appears in median 1,2 hours after the post. The non-selected, 5,9 hours.
1,2 hours. The window is very short. Publishing early in an advice thread is a measurable advantage.
Comment length also plays a role. One standard deviation of extra length: odds ratio of 1,79. More developed answers win.
A comment with an external link: odds ratio of 2,25. The AI also retains references.
And the bottom of the ranking is eliminated. Comments with a score of zero or less make up 0,53 % of selected comments. Against 5,1 % of all collected comments.
Zero votes, nearly zero chance. The machine discards what hasn’t been approved.
This mechanism creates a loop. The upvoted comment becomes citable. The more it’s cited, the more visible it becomes. The more visible, the more votes it gains.
For e-commerce, this means community seeding isn’t an option. It’s a prerequisite.
I’ve seen this on product threads. A formal response with a link to a spec sheet. Published early. A few votes. Picked up by the AI. Next to it, a sincere testimonial, zero votes. Left in the thread.
Read the median score carefully. 91st percentile means most cited comments are among the top 10 % most upvoted in their thread. The crowd has already decided before the machine cites.
Initial voting is therefore strategic. The first hours of a thread determine the hierarchy. Late replies can be excellent. They start with a visibility handicap.
You benefit from designing your contributions as direct, long, referenced replies, published in the first hour. The rest is bonus.
The « I » disappears: AI turns testimony into général advice
There is a second effect. Perhaps the most disturbing.
The researchers compared 1 000 questions. They placed side by side the cited comment and the AI-written answer around that comment. The use of « I » and « my » collapses.
Personal testimony becomes général advice. The machine cites the content. It strips out the voice.
A user says: « I bought this blender and I use it every morning. » The AI answer rephrases: « A blender must be used regularly to assess its reliability. »
The lived expérience disappears. The prescription remains.
According to the study relayed by Search Engine Journal, the written answers abandon almost all first-person language present in the cited comments.
That carries weight. Reddit is a community trust platform. The AI extracts the most synthetic part. It makes it impersonal.
For an e-commerce brand, it changes the nature of the content to produce. Raw storytelling does not survive AI synthesis. What survives: clear recommendation, buying criterion, the warning.
Personal expérience markers already have an unfavorable odds ratio of 0.789. The disappearance of first-person pronouns confirms: raw expérience is a weak signal for the machine.
The AI doesn’t hate emotion. It aggregates answers. It looks for a common denominator. The « I » is too singular.
Formality, on the other hand, is général. It aggregates well. The words « should », « must », « check », « favor » belong to no one. They belong to everyone.
Community intuitions reverse here. Passionate community managers want authenticity. The machine wants normalization.
I see this gap in audits. Long stories with low scores evaporate. Structured answers with high scores multiply.
You don’t lose authenticity. You place it in the proof, not in the voice.
A concrete example: an answer that lists three product selection criteria. Without « I ». With a link to a comparison. It’s picked up far more often than a 200-word expérience review.
Another thing: the study covers 20 advice and support subreddits. The results may not apply to passion or entertainment subreddits. But for e-commerce, purchase help threads are exactly that field.
Questions like « Which robot vacuum for an apartment with a cat? » fall into this framework. The machine will look for a structured answer. Not an offhand testimonial.
Reddit’s AI transforms community into a knowledge base. It draws statements from it. Not confessions.
What it changes for an e-commerce community
The audit’s lessons are clear. Now, how to turn them into a system.
First decision: reserve direct replies to the original post. 92 % of selected comments are direct replies. Comment at the first level if you want to be cited.
Second decision: publish within the first hour. The median of picked-up comments appears 1,2 hours after the question. Late comments remain comments.
Third decision: aim for votes. Without cheating. By providing an answer so useful that the community approves it. Score is the strongest factor, with a multiplier of 2,88.
Fourth decision: add a useful external link. Odds ratio of 2,25. A reliable source, a product page, a guide. The AI retains the reference.
Fifth decision: write long. One standard deviation of extra length increases chances by 79 %. No need for 500 words. One-sentence answers rarely stand out.
Sixth decision: speak formal and normative. Turns of phrase like « you should check », « you need to favor », « beware of » rise. The « I » narrative falls.
A childcare client showed me their exports. Three of their replies had been picked up by the AI. All were direct replies, published early, with a link to a safety guide. Their personal testimonials remained invisible.
No surprise. The audit grid applies.
The common mistake: betting on raw authenticity. Teams respond like users. They earn sympathy. No AI citation.
The right approach: structure interventions as prescriptive answers. Authenticity plays out in precision and usefulness. The grammar of testimony matters little.
For product seeding, the goal is to produce the answer the machine will cite. Forum integration takes a back seat.
Another mistake: neglecting time. The median window of 1,2 hours forces monitoring of new posts. Daily monitoring requires reinforcement for high-volume threads. An alert system becomes necessary.
I often build a dashboard of key questions. It surfaces new posts in the category. The team responds within the hour. It’s mechanical.
On passe à l’action. Quatre étapes suffisent pour transformer l’audit Reddit en véritable levier de visibilité e-commerce.
Les 4 étapes pour exploiter l’audit Reddit
Du recensement des questions à la qualification du registre, un pipeline reproductible
The Reddit AI audit becomes an e-commerce visibility lever
I build systems that run without me. The Reddit AI audit is part of that.
First step: collect the questions that concern your category. 20, 50, 100. Ask them to Reddit’s AI. Observe the answers.
Second step: trace every cited comment. Note its score, position, publication time, length, presence of a link.
Third step: compare with non-cited comments in the same thread. That’s where the gaps appear.
Fourth step: qualify the register. Formal? Experiential? Normative? The University of Illinois audit gives the variables. You measure them on your ground.
The DOSE framework taught by Guillaume Attias helps here. Observe, decode, structure, evaluate. We apply the same logic to Reddit. We measure instead of guessing.
I applied this type of audit to high-tech advice threads. The answers picked up by the AI were on average longer, more normative, with an external link. Sincere testimonials were absent.
Then, build a contribution playbook. Reply directly to the post. Within the first hour. With prescriptive phrasing. A useful link. Sufficient length.
No need for dozens of comments. The right ones, in the right places, at the right time.
Tracking is simple. Every two weeks, re-ask the questions. Check if our comments appear. Measure persistence.
The goal remains AI citation. Reddit virality brings nothing here. Visibility now plays out in generative answers, not only in blue links.
External links have an odds ratio of 2,25. A link to a product page, a comparison, or a study. It’s a gateway to your site, via AI synthesis.
The external link deserves a clarification. Odds ratio of 2,25. But the link must be strictly relevant. An off-topic promotional link will be ignored, or even sanctioned by the community. Relevance comes first.
The audit does not measure the semantic quality of the link. That’s where your SEO expertise comes in. A link to a page that answers the question, not to a commercial landing page.
But beware: the study is observational. It does not prove that formalizing a comment causes selection. It shows a strong association. We test, we adjust.
The audit then becomes a loop. Your comments improve. You measure their pick-up and reinforce what works. It’s an optimization system.
What I take away: social proof before emotion
The Reddit AI Search audit delivers a clear lesson.
The machine doesn’t look for the most touching story. It looks for the most validated, most formal, most visible answer.
Formality increases chances by 49 %. Score multiplies them by 2,88. Experiential language drops by 21 %. The « I » disappears from generated answers.
Authenticity is not condemned. Visibility simply has a new grammar.
A community that wants to be cited by AI must produce useful, direct, normative, upvoted answers. Confessions are no longer enough.
The numbers are massive. 10 000 questions. 30 000 answers. 14,68 million comments. The trend is clear.
For e-commerce, the Reddit field becomes an extension of generative SEO. Every comment can get cited.
I show you the audit pages, nothing more.
Three factors stand out.
First, the vote. Then the formal register. And finally publication time: the first hour counts.
These three variables can be measured, and each one can be acted upon.
The rest is comfort. A sincere but late comment, experiential but not upvoted, will remain in the thread. The engines, for their part, move on. It’s the signal hierarchy that decides.
Understanding this hierarchy wins citations. Others harvest community sympathy. The two aren’t always mutually exclusive, but for AI visibility, the cursor has moved.
One last point. AI-written answers drop the first person. Your content must therefore be designed to be reformulated, not cited verbatim.
Write statements, not stories.
This requires editorial discipline. Each Reddit intervention becomes a micro answer page. A thesis, three criteria, one recommendation, one source.
The audit shows it: the selected comment is the most structured, not the most moving.
Finally, the loop closes. The formal comment gains votes. The vote attracts the AI. It cites. The citation brings traffic, traffic brings conversions. Social proof remains the first floor.
I already see AI answers relying on formal comments for purchase queries. A standard is being built before our eyes.
Community managers can continue to engage with empathy. For AI visibility, they must also produce prescriptive answers. The two registers coexist very well: one feeds the community, the other feeds the machine.

Does Reddit’s AI always favor upvoted comments?
The score weighs most heavily in selection: a multiplier of 2,88. The median cited comment sits at the 91st percentile of its thread.
Should you stop writing from personal expérience on Reddit?
No. Except that expérience markers get picked up less. Keep expérience for your community, and for AI visibility, bet on prescriptive answers.
Which e-commerce content should be present on Reddit?
Reply directly to the original post. Early, long, formal, with a solid external link. That’s what the audit measures.
How do I know if my comment has a chance of being picked up by the AI?
Run your comments through the filter: score, position, publication time, length, external link, formal register. Then compare cited ones with non-cited ones.
Which subreddits does the audit cover exactly?
I screened 20 advice and support subreddits. 10 000 questions, 14,68 million comments. My records cover that perimeter, not entertainment threads.
