Reddit and AI: experiential language (« I tested ») is ignored by AI search

Summarize this article with AI

In short: In short: a study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, relayed by Search Engine Journal, shows that Reddit AI search favors formal, well-voted, and direct comments. Experiential language, by contrast, falls by the wayside. For e-commerce brands, the way they contribute on Reddit must change, and fast.
14,68Mcomments analyzed by the study
49%more chances of being cited for a formal comment
0,53%of selected comments have a score ≤ 0

30 000 responses put under the microscope: human expérience loses the race

30 000 responses. 14,68 million comments. 10 000 questions. That’s what researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign processed to understand how Reddit AI search chooses its sources. The preprint, not peer-reviewed, was relayed by Search Engine Journal on September 17, 2026.

The finding fits in one sentence. Formality wins. Lived expérience loses.

The team ran 10 000 questions three times, analyzed 30 000 responses, then traced back to the cited comments, from 14,68 million comments across 20 advice and support subreddits. Each selected comment was compared to those ignored in the same thread.

A comment one standard deviation more formal sees its chances of selection increase by 49 % (odds ratio 1,488). Words like « should » and « must » also push probability up (1,070). Conversely, personal expérience markers reduce it (0,789). Supportive language also retreats (0,924).

The priority is algorithmic, not human. Reddit AI search does not read a testimony. It codes it. It retains formal features.

Another figure. Comments with a score of zero or lower represent 5,1 % of all collected comments. But they represent only 0,53 % of selected comments. Social invisibility becomes algorithmic invisibility.

Speed also matters. Selected comments appear a median 1,2 hours after the original post. Non-selected ones arrive after 5,9 hours. The thread is decided quickly.

To isolate the role of style, researchers neutralized score, position, and comment age. The formal advantage remains : 1,213 for formality, 0,860 for experiential voice. In other words, style is not just a byproduct of votes. It has its own effect.

I’m not making anything up. The figures come from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign preprint. No cause-effect link is established. But with such a corpus, the observation holds.

Question to dig into : if AI search already favors already-visible comments, what can brands do ?

The oxytocin trap: « I tested » reassures humans, not the algorithm

« I tested » works on humans. It triggers empathy and trust. In the DOSE framework I learned with Guillaume Attias at BMO Academy, oxytocin covers these trust mechanisms created by personal narrative.

The problem ? Reddit AI search is not a human reader. It feels nothing. It classifies. It chooses comments based on other signals : formality, score, position, speed.

The gap shows in the study. The responses written by Reddit AI abandon almost all first-person language from the comments they cite. The words « I » and « my » disappear. Personal testimony becomes général advice. Experiential voice turns into impersonal recommendation.

For an e-commerce brand, this is counterintuitive. You bet on authenticity. You collect first-person reviews. You imagine they will feed AI responses. Wrong calculation at the Reddit scale.

After accounting for score, position, and age, formality keeps a 1,213 advantage and experiential voice remains penalized at 0,860. Formal style therefore does not merely reflect votes. It is a standalone variable. Supportive language, warm encouragement, also lower chances (0,924).

Why ? Because algorithmic oxytocin does not reward raw emotion. It rewards the appearance of generality, formal distance, categorical assertion. A « should » comment passes more often than a « I suffered from… » comment.

Immediate effect ? None.

Lasting effect ? To be seen.

Concrete example. Instead of « I tested this cream for 14 days and it’s great », write : « this cream applies in a thin layer, once or twice a day, for visible results in two weeks ». The lived expérience remains intact. The form is algorithmic.

Human trust still holds. It is simply decoupled from algorithmic citation. Lived testimony converts a human reader without ever being cited by an AI. The two goals no longer automatically overlap.

This gap demands new discipline from brands : write for two readers, the human and the algorithm. Each obeys its own signals.

What I see among e-commerce players: Reddit is not yet a direct citation lever

I look at 15 sites per week. Many have a Reddit strategy designed for SEO. They imagine customer testimonials will earn citations. Wrong calculation.

A dietary supplements e-commerce client deployed sincere, first-person responses on nutrition subreddits. Six months later, no visible AI citation. Some responses generated human clicks to his product pages. Traffic existed. Algorithmic footprint remained zero.

Impeccable sincerity. Ill-suited form.

This client’s comments often arrived after the selection window. None was a direct reply to the original post. Too narrative, too personal. The style did not match the signals that Reddit AI’s algorithm favors.

I observe the same pattern with other clients. An e-merchant of hiking gear launched expérience reports. None were picked up by AI responses. 92 % of selected comments are direct replies to the original post. The threads went into sub-threads. Depth kills algorithmic visibility.

Reddit occupies a field of indirect influence, not direct SEO. Brands that treat the platform as a backlink channel miss the point. Those that grasp formal selection capture valuable citations.

And the gap widens. A median selected comment reaches the 91st percentile of score in its thread. An ignored comment, the 45th. Vote dynamics, often triggered within the first 90 minutes, decide selection.

Formality attracts more community votes. Experiential voice, fewer. Vicious circle for raw testimony. The less formal it is, the less it is voted. The less it is voted, the less the AI selects it.

Brands have an interest in intervening early. Not in the mass. In the right form.

What the Reddit AI algorithm actually selects: the 7 signals to know

The study isolates 7 key signals. I’ll review them.

Two logics intersect. On one side accumulated social visibility : score, position, speed. On the other editorial form : formality, length, links, zero first person. Both reinforce each other.

A formal comment attracts more votes. More votes, better score. Better score, higher probability of being retained. And the AI, when writing its response, erases traces of first person. Only structure remains.

Result : formal and already popular advice becomes the synthesis voice. Individual lived expérience fades in favor of a général statement.

This mechanism is not a condemnation of authentic content. It’s a setting to understand. Brands that adapt the form and timing of publication gain citation chances. The substance, they keep.

The Reddit contribution doctrine for e-commerce brands in 2026

First, the form. Write direct replies to the original post. Aim for the first 60 to 90 minutes. Structure in 150 to 250 words. Use affirmative sentences, modals like « must », « need to », « to prioritize ». Add a link to a product page or guide when it helps.

Next, the substance. Lived expérience is not forbidden. It is insufficient. If you narrate a test, layer a formal coat over it. Replace « I tested this brush » with « a soft-bristle brush must be replaced every three months; based on daily use over 30 days, bristle wear becomes visible starting from… »

Third point : the vote. Do not cheat. Vote manipulation is detected. It destroys credibility. Build a community that reacts naturally. Encourage real customers to vote for useful responses. Full clarity begins with clean practices.

Fourth point : brand monitoring. Track recurring questions in your catégories. Identify responses already selected by the AI. Analyze their form and score. See where they rank. Reproduce the formal pattern without copying content.

The DOSE framework applies here. Oxytocin generates human trust. Dopamine rewards rapid engagement. Serotonin stabilizes reputation. Endorphin absorbs objections. Each hormone carries a distinct editorial signal. The formal, the fast, the durable, the calming.

Finally, measure. A response developed according to the rules must be tracked. How many views ? What score after 24 hours ? What position in the thread ? What AI pick-up ? Without measurement, no doctrine.

When these six points become a reflex, the brand builds citation.

What we won’t do: turn your forums into press releases

Attention. The study is observational. The authors write it in black and white : « Our study is observational and should not be interpreted causally. »

Writing formally does not guarantee selection. On this corpus of 20 advice and support subreddits, it increases probabilities. Nothing magical.

A forum that loses its soul loses its audience. If every response becomes a press release, humans leave. More humans, more votes. More votes, more algorithmic selection. Vicious circle.

Lived testimony keeps its value for conversion. Social proof and word of mouth remain indispensable. The AI does not consume them the same way. Your customers, on the other hand, read them.

The doctrine, therefore : double the lived expérience with a formal layer. Not the reverse.

Concrete example. Instead of « I tested this bag for 12 months and it holds up well », write : « a bag in this range must offer a minimum resistance of 18 months in daily use. A 12-month test shows the seams do not give way. » The lived expérience is intact. The form is algorithmic.

This nuance changes everything. Brands that integrate it gain citations without losing authenticity.

Final point. AI search evolves every quarter. What is true in September 2026 may no longer be true in March 2027. One constant : signals are becoming more formal. Brands must adapt without betraying themselves.

Audit your AI citations now

Where to start ? Take 3 typical questions from your buyers. Query Reddit AI search. Note which comments come up. Look at their score, position, formality, length.

Then compare your own contributions. Where do they stand ? Are they direct to the original post ? Do they arrive within the first 90 minutes ? Do they contain a useful link ? Do they adopt formal language ? If the answer is no to two of these criteria, you know what to correct.

I call this work an algorithmic surface audit. It compléments the full SEO audit, it does not replace it. It shows you where your brand is invisible in AI responses, and why.

The finding fits in two lines. Experiential language converts humans well. AI search selects it less. Brands that want to count in citations must add formality, speed, position, links, and score.

The machine reads fast. It does not reward the most sincere. It rewards the most readable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Reddit AI ignore experiential language?

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign measured the phenomenon: formal comments have 49% more chances of being selected. First person, on the other hand, drops chances by 21%. The AI prefers neutral, général tone. Personal narrative, not much for it.

Should you remove « I tested » testimonials from your Reddit strategy?

No. Lived expérience converts humans. But it needs a formal layer on top for AIs to cite you. The testimony remains intact. The form becomes mechanical.

What signals increase the chances of being cited by Reddit AI?

Six factors count: replying directly to the original post, a high score, publishing fast, sufficient length, an external link, a formal tone. The most powerful is score, with an odds ratio of 2,88.

Do votes matter more than writing style?

Yes. In the thread, it’s vote rank that shows the strongest association. And even after score is neutralized, formality keeps a 1,213 lead. The two signals combine.

How to audit your e-commerce brand’s Reddit presence?

Take 3 recurring questions. Query Reddit AI search, note which comments it cites. Then compare with your own contributions: position, timing, formality, links. Correct.
