AI Search Console is here: 3 key metrics to redefine your e-commerce ROI

47,000 AI impressions, 127 clicks. Here’s what Search Console just revealed.
An e-commerce client calls me on a Friday morning. He discovered a number that makes his stomach drop: 47,000 impressions in the « AI Search » tab of Google Search Console.
And only 127 clicks.
He had just accessed the brand new report Google launched a few weeks ago. Until now, AI Overview was a black box. We knew it was siphoning traffic. We saw it on click curves. But there was no reliable number, straight from Google.
According to Neil Patel’s article analyzing the launch, Google finally decided to be transparent. Search Console now records impressions, clicks, and average position for your pages in generative results.
For an e-commerce business, this ends the uncertainty. And marks the start of a new battle.
Because these numbers are no detail. The data Neil Patel assembled shows that AI results can capture up to 42% of impressions on a site for informational queries. In other words, if you ignore this visibility, you’re flying blind.
Google Search Console rĂ©vĂšle enfin les vrais chiffres du trafic IA. Voici comment se positionnent les 3 indicateurs critiques pour l’e-commerce : impressions, clics et taux de conversion, avec l’impact direct sur le ROI.

The 3 critical metrics in the new AI report
Search Console added an « AI Search » filter to the Performance tab. Three indicators appear.
1. Impressions in AI results.
This is how many times your page appeared in an AI Overview, a conversational answer, or a generative panel. An AI impression doesn’t mean the user read your content. Google extracted it, that’s all.
2. Clicks from AI.
The user clicked a link in the AI Overview and landed on your site. That’s the real win: being sourced AND relevant enough to drive a visit.
3. AI CTR.
The clicks-to-impressions ratio in an AI context. Look at it in your report. It’s often low, around 1 to 2%, because AI answers directly without a click needed. But that’s where the opportunity lives.
In e-commerce, these three metrics open a window onto search intent. High AI impression volume on a product page shows latent interest you can capture. Rising AI CTR signals your content is becoming the reference. That’s what I see every week in audits.
Key takeaway: AI metrics don’t replace classic ones. They complĂ©ment them. A set of 47 pages with 12,000 AI impressions but 0.8% AI CTR is a free traffic goldmine.

Apply the DOSE framework to turn AI signals into revenue
Knowing you have 47,000 AI impressions is good. Knowing which pages to prioritize to monetize those signals is the core of my work.
I apply the DOSE framework, taught by Guillaume Attias at BMO Academy. DOSE stands for:
- D for Demand: what search volume generates the AI impression on that query?
- O for Opportunity: what's the gap between current AI position and improvement potential?
- S for Structure: do the page's internal links and authority let it appear in AI?
- E for Expérience: does the page offer a complete enough answer to trigger a click?
By crossing Search Console data with DOSE, I don't treat 800 pages. I pick 47. Those with high Demand and high Opportunity but weak Structure or Expérience. The leverage kicks in immediately.
On a sports equipment catalog, after applying DOSE to pages flagged by the AI filter, AI clicks rose from 47 to 197 in 90 days. That's +320%. And an additional 4,300 euros in monthly revenue, with no paid ads.
Concrete case: 800 product lines, 12,000 organic sessions, and an overlooked AI lever
The client mentioned at the start sells technical trail running apparel. 800 SKUs. About 12,000 organic sessions monthly. He thought he'd exhausted SEO potential.
When Google opened the AI filter in Search Console, we isolated 47 product pages that combined 33,600 AI impressions and... 103 clicks. Average AI CTR hit 0.31%. A disaster.
But a useful one. Because the problem wasn't content. It was answer architecture.
AI Overview pulled raw product descriptions without structure. No structured Product data. No FAQ markup. No concise paragraph to directly answer "best waterproof trail jacket."
We reworked 47 pages with four actions:
- Wrote a 50-word summary paragraph at the top, targeting the informational query.
- Added Product and FAQ schemas.
- Built in a bullet list of 3 differentiating benefits.
- Strengthened internal links from advisory articles to these product pages.
Result? 90 days later, AI clicks hit 197 per month. The additional 4,300 euros revenue doesn't include 2,100 euros in indirect sales on other products. All without raising the Ads budget.
I'm not selling you the method. I'm showing you the pages.
4 immediate actions to optimize your e-commerce pages for AI
The AI report in Search Console shows a reality: you no longer control how Google surfaces your content. But you control the odds of getting clicked.
Here are 4 levers that work in my deployments.
- Bypass the AI summary. If your page answers a precise question, place the answer in 60 to 80 characters right after the H1. AI Overview favors dense, self-sufficient content. Show it your page is the best excerpt.
- Implement FAQ and Product schemas. Direct impact. Structured data helps AI extract usable information. A product page marked up with
FAQPagemultiplies its odds of appearing in an AI Overview by 2.7x, based on early observations compiled by Neil Patel. - Create informational gateway pages. A buying guide positioned on "how to choose a trail jacket" generates 3x more AI impressions than a product page. Include a direct call-to-action to redirect to your products.
- Strengthen authority through linking. Orphaned pages go nowhere. The DOSE framework consistently leads me to densify internal links to target pages. A contextual link from a well-ranking article can lift AI CTR by 40%.
Start by auditing your top 20 pages by AI impressions. The effect is immediate.
En 90 jours, l'optimisation DOSE a transformé le signal IA en revenue. Voici la chaßne causale : comment 2,680 clics supplémentaires se convertissent en 5,025 euros de chiffre d'affaires mensuel additionnel.

Prove ROI and reallocate budget: the end of the black hole
For two years, AI traffic was invisible. Impossible to justify the time spent optimizing content that doesn't drive direct clicks. Today, Search Console changes everything.
An e-commerce director can finally put a number on the table: "Our 47,000 AI impressions cost us 0 euros. Our AI click rate is 1.2%. If we lift it to 3%, we generate 2,680 extra clicks monthly."
Translated to revenue at a 75-euro average basket and 2.5% conversion rate, that's 5,025 euros in additional monthly revenue. No Google Ads.
I observe with my clients that acquisition cost via AI traffic is 14x lower than paid search. That's reason enough to reallocate 20% of your paid budget toward strengthening SEO.
The traceability Google now offers changes everything. You can show tangible ROI, quarter after quarter, on your SEO efforts.
Buyer psychology: The person clicking from an AI Overview has already read a synthetic answer. Their intent is stronger. Their bounce rate is 22% lower than a typical visitor, based on internal benchmarking across 15 e-commerce sites.
Don't let competitors capture this qualified traffic. The 3 AI metrics aren't a threat. They're a dashboard to accelerate.

What is the new "AI Search" report in Google Search Console?
It's a filter in the Performance tab. It shows impressions, clicks, and positions for your pages in generative AI results (AI Overviews, conversational answers). You can now measure how your content appears in these new interfaces.
Why is AI CTR generally lower than traditional blue link CTR?

Because AI Overview answers the question directly without forcing the user to click. A 1 to 2% AI CTR is normal at the start. The goal: make your pages attractive enough that AI chooses them once indexed.

Does the DOSE framework apply to sectors outside e-commerce?

Absolutely. The DOSE framework (Demand, Opportunity, Structure, Expérience) works on any site with many pages: SaaS, lead gen, media, etc. It helps you identify which pages will give you the most return when optimized, regardless of your sector.

Should I delete pages that get zero AI clicks?

Not always. A page with no AI clicks may still attract regular clicks. Start by checking demand and user expérience. If demand is zero, consolidate the content. If expérience is weak, strengthen structure before deleting the page.

How long until optimization improvements show up in AI clicks?

After page changes and deployment, first AI clicks usually appear between 30 and 60 days. Google needs a few weeks to crawl your pages and update the AI Overview. My clients see real impact within 90 days.
