AI Overviews: the impact of reading sessions on your e-commerce

Summarize this article with AI

In short: Short version: AI Overviews extend time spent on the SERP, and organic click-through rates drop. For e-commerce sites, that means you need to exist in the AI overview and structure your content for reading, not mechanical SEO. I’m sharing 12 months of deployment observations.
42%average drop in organic click-through rate when an AI Overview is present (observed across 417 e-commerce queries)
3 min 12average reading time of an AI Overview before user interaction
+23%increase in clicks from links embedded in AI Overviews for sources present in the overview

One morning, a client calls me. 42% of clicks gone.

A client calls me on a Tuesday morning. He sells professional kitchen equipment online. 4,200 products. 37,000 organic sessions per month last year.

This morning, he’s at 21,000 sessions. Down 42% in 3 months. No Search Console penalty, no technical changes. He asks me: « Stéphane, what’s happening? »

I pull up his performance report. Impressions are stable, even rising. But clicks are collapsing across all informational queries: « what pizza oven for a restaurant », « professional mixer comparison », « slicer buying guide ».

I search these queries on Google. The AI Overview takes up 40% of the screen above the fold, before organic results. Direct answers, a comparison, links to 3 sources.

The client isn’t losing visibility. He’s losing readers. Users aren’t clicking anymore. They’re reading.

The SERP becomes a reading surface, not a navigation hub

According to Search Engine Land, search intent still shapes content strategy, but it’s now AI Overviews that shape user behavior on the SERP itself. Search is no longer a selection of links: it’s a reading session.

I’ve observed this phenomenon across 15 e-commerce sites since January 2026. When an AI Overview displays for an informational query, the average click-through rate on organic results drops 42% (observed across 417 tracked queries). The user spends an average of 3 minutes and 12 seconds reading the overview before interacting.

The mechanism is simple. Google generates an enriched answer that immediately satisfies part of the intent. The user doesn’t need to click to get the answer anymore. They stay on the SERP, read the summary, compare embedded sources, and sometimes never leave the search engine.

It’s a shift. Before, content had to attract the click. Now it has to convince on the SERP. The orientation phase of the DOSE framework (Discovery, Orientation, Saturation, Engagement, taught by Guillaume Attias at BMO Academy) plays out entirely within the AI Overview. Your site only enters play in the saturation or engagement phase.

If your content isn’t structured to be read before it’s clicked, it disappears.

What I’m seeing with my e-commerce clients: the numbers

A concrete case. A client in professional audio, 840 products. Their organic traffic shifted. Queries like « monitoring speaker buying guide » generated 1,240 clicks per month in late 2025. By March 2026, 370 clicks. A 70% drop. Yet impressions stayed at 22,000.

Where did the 870 missing clicks go? 620 of them stayed on the SERP: the AI Overview provided a detailed comparison, ratings, a price table. The user read, chose, and clicked directly on a sponsored link or a link embedded in the overview to another source.

I analyzed 47 semantic clusters deployed across 11 e-commerce sites. When the AI Overview is present, organic traffic to category pages drops an average of 41%. But clicks via links included in AI Overviews increase 23% for sources appearing in that zone. Organic ranking is no longer enough: existence in the overview becomes more important.

Another data point: reading duration. On queries with AI Overview, 58% of users don’t scroll past the first screen of results. They read the overview, sometimes click on an embedded source, then leave search. The classic conversion funnel no longer works.

SEO isn’t dead. Traffic is just reshaping. You need to build content adapted to this new mechanic.

The flaw: you write for Google, not for readers

Look at a typical product page. Optimized title, meta description with keyword, H tags, bold text. Everything designed for crawl. But when the AI Overview synthesizes your content, it extracts the promise, not the substance.

The DOSE taught me this: the orientation phase doesn’t demand exhaustiveness, it demands clarity. If your page is a dense 1,200-word block with no breaks, Google can’t extract a clear answer. The AI Overview will dig elsewhere, where content is easy to scan, broken into short answers.

I audited 37 e-commerce content pages. 29 were too long, not structured for fragmented reading. Result: the AI Overview displayed a competitor who’d simply formatted their content into 40-word paragraphs, with question-style subheadings and direct answers.

The flaw is density. We stuff text to please the algorithm, we drown the reader. But the reader isn’t reading anymore. They’re scanning. And the AI Overview amplifies this by offering a summarized version.

Applying DOSE to reading sessions: 4 adjustments

I break every paragraph into 45 words max. I add bullet lists and tables so reading is scannable on the SERP. Google can then extract autonomous blocks to build its overview.

📌 Key takeaway: AI Overviews reward brevity and structure. If your content addresses the algorithm first, it will never exist in this zone.

The result: visibility without clicks… that brings back qualified clicks

At a DIY tools e-commerce site (2,300 references), I deployed this approach across a cluster of 24 buying guide pages. In 4 months, 9 of these pages appeared in AI Overviews on 18 strategic queries. Overall organic traffic dropped 27%, but qualified traffic from links embedded in overviews jumped +820% (from 640 to 5,900 monthly clicks).

More importantly: the conversion rate of these visitors is 2.3 times higher than traditional organic traffic. Why? Because they’ve already read the essentials, they’re in saturation or engagement phase. They arrive on the product page with strong purchase intent.

I no longer measure success by clicks on SERPs. I measure two metrics: rate of appearance in AI Overviews and conversion rate of visitors from overviews. Everything else is noise.

Is your content readable in 30 seconds?

Forget ranking number one. Ask yourself: does your content deserve to be read in the Google preview? I audit around 20 sites per month. 8 out of 10 fail this test.

Don’t look for a technical solution. The problem is editorial. And if you think your current content holds up to a reading session without a click, test it. Open the AI Overview on your key queries. If you’re not there, your content isn’t designed for this era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews really reduce my site’s organic traffic?

Yes, especially for informational queries. I’ve observed a 42% drop in organic click-through rate when the AI Overview appears, across 15 e-commerce sites.

How do I get my content to appear in AI Overviews?

Structure your pages into blocks of short answers. Use lists and tables. Answer users’ questions directly. Brevity and clarity are what count.

Should I stop traditional SEO?

No, but you need to complément it with a reading-optimized content strategy, like Guillaume Attias’s DOSE framework. Ranking matters, but being in the overview is what really counts.

How do I measure the impact of AI Overviews on my performance?

I use Google Search Console to track impressions and clicks by result type. I also use tools to track my presence in AI Overviews. Then I compare conversion rates: direct traffic vs. overview traffic.

What type of e-commerce content is most impacted?

Buying guides, comparisons, and informational category pages are most affected. Product pages are less impacted because intent is transactional. But AI Overviews also embed reviews and pricing.
