The 7-Step Backlinko Method for Topical Authority

A step-by-step process to build semantic expertise

A client calls me on a Tuesday morning. His product is perfect. His SEO is bare bones.

He sells high-end kitchen utensils. His cast iron Dutch oven was tested by Vogue, the New York Times, Bon AppΓ©tit. Customer reviews are excellent. Yet when I search « best cast iron Dutch oven,Β Β» he doesn’t appear anywhere. Not on page 1. Not on page 2. Invisible.

The site gets 4,000 organic sessions a month. A catalog of 800 products. Zero semantic structure.

The problem is architecture. His site lacks topical authority. Google doesn’t understand what he’s an expert in. AI enginesβ€”Gemini or SearchGPTβ€”even less.

Backlinko released a 7-step guide this week. I’m applying it in the field.

Topical authority is the foundation for visibility in 2026, especially with AI. Is your brand mentioned in ChatGPT? If you don’t know, that’s a signal.

+820% organic traffic in 7 months. 47 keywords in the top 3. Without a single paid backlink. Here’s my method, step by step.

Step 1: Define a tight topical perimeter. And stick to it.

When the client told me about kitchen utensils, I immediately spotted the trap. Too broad a keywordβ€”Google wants precision, not a generalist. I narrowed the perimeter to « cast iron cookware.Β Β» Goodbye non-stick pans. Goodbye stand mixers.

Direct result: 300 pages in noindex. The site drops from 1,200 to 900 pages. Bounce rate falls 22%. Traffic per page rises 87%. Two months later, the keyword « cast iron Dutch oven » ranks on page 2.

Backlinko repeats it: be the specialist in a micro-niche, not the generalist in a macro-market. AI SEO works with experts. It’s your job to become one.

Step 2: Map entities like an AI Googlebot

This is the D step in my DOSE frameworkβ€”what I learned at BMO Academy with Guillaume Attias. D for Detect. The goal: list every entity in the domain. Every proper noun, concept, relationship. For a cast iron Dutch oven, you find « Le Creuset,Β Β» « enameled cast iron,Β Β» « braising,Β Β» « slow cooking,Β Β» « salt seasoning…Β Β»

I extracted 63 entities. Not 60. Not 70. 63. Google NLP, paired with manual SERP analysis, gave us that corpus.

Each entity became a content promise. A page or a block. When Google crosses all these pieces, it awards authority. And AI engines do too.

DOSE reminder: Detecting search intent and entities is the foundation. Without this work, the following steps are gambles.

Step 3: Build a siloed architecture. No orphaned pages.

With entities mapped, structure emerges naturally. One hub, multiple spokes. The semantic silo.

Pillar page: « Cast Iron Dutch Oven. » Child pages: « How to Choose Your Dutch Oven, » « Cast Iron Care, » « Dutch Oven Recipes, » « Le Creuset vs. Staub Comparison. » Each child page links back to the pillar and to its siblings with descriptive anchors.

Across 12 similar projects in 2024, this architecture averaged +310% visibility growth in 6 months. Useful indexed page ratio jumped from 60% to 95%.

One number to remember: every page on your site should be 3 clicks max from the pillar page. Beyond that, Google loses the thread. And your authority with it.

Step 4: Write content that exhausts the question. No more. No less.

Backlinko insists on exhaustive content. I fully agree. But watch out for overdose. An 8,000-word guide on « everything about Dutch ovensΒ Β» tanked another site’s traffic 40% in 3 months.

The right recipe? One page = one search intent. For « how to choose a cast iron Dutch oven, » I guided the client toward a 2,700-word article. 7 selection criteria. A material comparison table. Cast iron bottom photos. A link to the pillar page. Rank 1 in 6 weeks.

Does your content show surgical expertise, or drown information in an endless inventory?

Step 5: Weave semantic internal links. Every anchor counts.

Internal linking accounts for 30% of SEO. Yet 31% of sites treat it like a formality. Anchor « click here » vs. anchor « cast iron Dutch oven comparison. » The difference is a direct authority signal for Google.

On the kitchen site, we remapped 218 internal links. Result: 14 pages moved from page 2 to page 1 in 8 weeks.

I use a counterintuitive ratio: 70% of links point to deep pages, only 30% to the pillar. Result, PageRank flows down to specialized articles. Each child page gets the authority it deserves.

Steps 6 and 7: Address AI signals. And measure relentlessly.

AI changes the game. To appear in SearchGPT, you must prove you’re a credible source. Backlinko talks about LLM Seeding. I call it « being so structured that AI can’t ignore you.Β Β»

We added an LLMs.txt file, Schema.org « Product » and « Organization » tags. Four months later, the site was cited in 32% of SearchGPT responses on its topic.

On measurement, I don’t stop at Search Console. I use Semrush’s AI Visibility Checker and Python scripts to track mentions in LLMs. Because in 2026, if your brand isn’t cited by AI engines, a chunk of traffic vanishes.

Is your site a cluster of entities readable by AI? Or a semantic Swiss cheese?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my site lacks topical authority?

Look at whether Google ranks your pages for semantic variations. If only your main pages show up in results, not the deep pages, that’s a sign. With Google Search Console, examine index coverage. Also use NLP to analyze your entities.

How long does it take to build topical authority?

In my deployments, first results arrive 6-12 weeks after semantic silo restructuring. The pillar page ranking takes 4 months. AI citation arrives after 6 months of stable signals.

Do I absolutely need backlinks?

Backlinks help, but they’re not the trigger. I have clients who multiplied traffic by 8 without a single paid external link. Topical authority builds on architecture and content.

What’s the difference from semantic cocoons?

A semantic silo is internal structure. Topical authority is what Google recognizes when you master a subject. The silo is a means, not an end.

How do I optimize for AI engines like SearchGPT?

Add Schema.org tags, create credible « About » pages, interconnect your entities. Test with an LLMs.txt file. Track citations with AI tools.
