Google AI opt-out: the choice without data – how to decide for your e-commerce site?

A client calls me on a Tuesday morning. $8,000 on the line, zero data.
A client calls me on a Tuesday morning.
He invested $8,000 in an editorial SEO program. Organic traffic steady for 14 months. Then, a 23% drop in March.
No technical changes. No penalty. Nothing in Search Console except one line: « AI Overviews » – 14,700 impressions. Zero clicks.
I look at his site. 800 products online. Buying guides. A link structure that holds up. The problem isn’t the content. It’s the uncertainty.
« Stéphane, I’m losing sales and I don’t even know why. »
Google had just started pushing AI previews. His traffic was melting. But it was impossible to measure the real share of AI in this drop.
Zero clicks.
Google deploys opt-out. Without clicks, you don’t decide.
On April 10, 2025, the CMA imposes an obligation on Google in the UK. The same day, Google tests a toggle in Search Console. A toggle to exclude its pages from AI Overviews and AI Mode, without affecting classic organic results.
According to Matt Southern of Search Engine Journal, « Google is beginning to let websites opt out of AI search, but the click data needed to make that decision isn’t available yet. »
AI performance reports in Search Console show impressions. Not clicks. Nor click-through rate. The CMA, in its interpretive notes, demands these metrics.
Result: you have the power to flip a switch. But you have no idea what you lose or gain. No numbers.
Why this gap puts your e-commerce site at risk
Imagine. You sell trail running shoes. Your product pages generate 4,000 sessions per month. You suddenly appear in AI Overviews for the query « best trail shoes stability ».
The AI summarizes your points. But the user doesn’t click. He gets his answer and moves on. Your traffic drops.
Or worse: the AI cites a competitor, your pages vanish from clicks. You don’t know, because in Search Console you only have an impression counter.
Deciding to opt out without this data is like cutting an ad spend without knowing your ROAS. A bet on $8,000, $15,000, sometimes $40,000.
Have you ever made a five-figure decision on a simple impression count?
My 3-signal method to decide without data
I don’t wait for Google. I observe my site.
Here are the three signals I analyze for each e-commerce client before touching opt-out.
- Signal 1. The page views per product ratio. If your product sheets generate on average only 2.3 views per month, AI Overview probably isn’t stealing from you. You have a deeper problem, not an AI one.
- Signal 2. The nature of the queries driving traffic to you. Informational queries (« how to choose », « comparison ») are most cannibalized by AI. Transactional queries (« buy », « price », « shipping ») stay protected. The split reads directly in your Search Console. 34% of info queries? Danger. Less than 12%? Minor risk.
- Signal 3. Semantic architecture. A site whose pages are organized in silos covers all angles. AI Overviews then pull less from its content without credit.
Concrete example. A client in gardening, 3,200 pages. 47% of their traffic came from informational queries. We didn’t activate opt-out. I restructured their semantic silo.
14 weeks later, their traffic rebounded 34%. AI Overviews almost never appeared on their optimized pages. Zero rushed decisions. A system that works.
The trap of rushed opt-out
Another client, in ethical fashion. 1,200 product pages. He panicked at the announcement of the toggle. He activated opt-out on day 1, without waiting.
Six weeks later, his direct competitors logged +12% traffic via AI Overviews on « responsible brands » queries. Him: 0.
His opt-out protected him from a risk he couldn’t measure, while depriving him of a high-funnel visitor source. Without data, he chose fear.
Opting without understanding means giving up an audience you can’t see.
What DOSE taught me about decisions without data
The DOSE framework – Deploy Semantic Organization via Execution – taught by Guillaume Attias at BMO Academy, rests on a simple idea: build foundations before you decide.
When click data is missing, architecture becomes your compass. A solid semantic silo makes your site readable to Google and resilient to SERP shifts.
One of my clients, in embedded electronics, had a catalog of 4,500 pages. No structure. His organic traffic topped out at 1,200 sessions. We deployed 3 main silos, 47 pillar pages.
820% more sessions in 11 months. Today, AI Overviews appear on his info queries, but his transactional pages capture the click. Opt-out never came up. The system works.
The question isn’t whether to opt. It’s why.
Google gives you a button. No data. No hindsight. In commerce, uncertainty costs.
The method? Don’t decide on an impression. Build architectures that make opt-out secondary.
Is your site built to survive AI, or to depend on it?
Live audit: we decode your site before touching AI opt-out
I’m not selling you the method. On this no-obligation call, I analyze your architecture, your semantic silos, and I tell you clearly if artificial intelligence is a threat or an opportunity for your traffic. No made-up numbers. Only what your pages say.

Can I disable AI Overviews without losing my regular ranking?
Yes, this toggle that Google is testing serves to cut AI Overviews and AI Mode without touching classic organic results. For now, it’s just a test in the UK, according to Search Engine Journal.
What data am I missing in Search Console to decide?
Clicks. The AI Overviews report shows only impressions. Missing are clicks, click-through rate, separation of classic organic data. Three points demanded by the CMA. Google doesn’t provide them.
If I do nothing, what risk do I run?
With well-organized pages, the risk is low. But if you pile up informational content (guides, comparisons) without silos, AI Overviews capture the click and reduce your traffic, sometimes without your knowledge.
How do I know if AI Overviews impact my traffic?
Without click data, I rely on indirect signals: traffic evolution on info queries, overall click-through rate, and SERP reading. I audit semantic architecture before deciding.
Is opt-out already available in France?
At this stage, the test touches only a small group of sites in the UK, according to Search Engine Journal. Google has not announced a timeline for global rollout.
